George Rochberg

מלחין אמריקאי

George Rochberg was a prominent American composer of contemporary classical music, known for his innovative and expressive works. Initially, he was associated with serial composition, a technique he employed for a significant period in his career. However, a pivotal event in his life led to a shift in his approach: the death of his teenage son in 1964 prompted Rochberg to reevaluate his compositional style, as he felt that serialism was insufficient to convey the depth of his emotions.

Rochberg's subsequent incorporation of tonal elements in his music sparked controversy among critics and fellow composers, particularly in the 1970s. Despite this, he continued to compose, driven by his unique artistic vision. In addition to his work as a composer, Rochberg was a dedicated educator, serving as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania until 1983. He also held administrative positions, including chairing the music department until 1968 and later becoming the first Annenberg Professor of the Humanities in 1978, a testament to his stature as a scholar and artist.
