Esther Cailingold
לוחמת ההגנה בקרבות תש"ח
Esther Cailingold was a British schoolteacher of Polish descent who dedicated her life to activism. Born in the United Kingdom, she worked as an educator before taking a remarkable turn in her life by joining the Haganah, a Jewish paramilitary organization, as a volunteer soldier. Her decision to fight with the Jewish forces during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War showcased her strong convictions and commitment to the cause.
Esther Cailingold's life was cut short when she succumbed to wounds sustained during the battle for the Old City of Jerusalem. Despite her tragic demise, her legacy lives on through various commemorations in Israel, including a memorial forest at Kibbutz Lavi, a scholarship fund at Yeshivat HaKotel, and several war memorials. Her memory is also honored in England through the Esther Cailingold society, part of Emunah UK, a charity that supports Jewish children's welfare worldwide. Additionally, several libraries and rooms in children's homes in Israel bear her name, serving as a testament to her enduring impact.
