List of Sephardi chief rabbis of the Land of Israel

תואר המוענק לרב הראשי הספרדי לישראל ונשמר גם לאחר סיום כהונתו

The Sephardi chief rabbis of the Land of Israel have a long history of spiritual leadership, dating back to the mid-17th century. These prominent figures have guided the Sephardic community in the region, holding a position of great importance and respect. The title bestowed upon them, Rishon LeZion, originates from a biblical verse in Isaiah 41:27 and has been in use since the early 17th century.

From 1842 to 1920, the position of Hakham Bashi of the Vilayet of Damascus was officially recognized by both the Ottoman and British governments, lending significant credibility and authority to the role of the Sephardi chief rabbi. Throughout the centuries, these spiritual leaders have played a vital role in shaping the religious and cultural landscape of the Sephardic community in the Land of Israel, with their influence extending to the present day.
