Stephen Samuel Wise

Stephen Samuel Wise was a prominent Hungarian-American Reform rabbi, born in 1874 in Budapest, Hungary. At a young age, he moved to New York with his family, where he would later follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by pursuing a career in the rabbinate. Wise went on to serve as a rabbi in New York and Portland, Oregon, demonstrating his commitment to his faith and community.

In addition to his work as a rabbi, Wise was a dedicated activist, involved in various social and political causes. Notably, he was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), showcasing his commitment to promoting equality and justice. As a Zionist leader, Wise played a significant role in the Progressive Era, leveraging his position to advocate for social change and reform. Throughout his life, Wise remained a respected figure in both his religious and activist communities, leaving a lasting legacy until his passing in 1949.
