Teseo Ambrogio degli Albonesi
Italian humanist (1469-1540)
Teseo Ambrogio degli Albonesi was a prominent Italian humanist, active from 1469 to 1540, with a particular interest in the field of Judaism and Semitic languages. His expertise in these areas was notably developed during the Fifth Council of the Lateran, where he was entrusted by Cardinal Bernardino López de Carvajal with the task of providing religious instruction to a Syrian priest. This experience not only deepened his understanding of Latin and liturgy but also led to his proficiency in the Syriac language.
As a proponent of Christian Kabbalah, degli Albonesi made significant contributions to the study of Semitic languages. His seminal work, "Introductio ad Chaldaicam linguam, Syriacam, atque Armenicam, et decem alias linguas," stands as one of the earliest Western examinations of Syriac and Armenian languages. The work is divided into an introduction to Chaldean, Syriac, and Armenian, followed by an appendix that presents various alphabets, including those of Coptic and Ethiopic languages. Additionally, it explores the ancestry of European languages, with a focus on the languages of Italy and a discussion on Etruscan, showcasing degli Albonesi's broad linguistic interests and scholarly depth.
