Yaakov Meir

Yaakov Meir was a prominent Orthodox rabbi who played a significant role in the history of Palestine. Born in 1856, he went on to become a distinguished Talmudic scholar, renowned for his proficiency in Hebrew and five other languages. His reputation as a respected rabbi in Jerusalem was well-established, earning him a position of great esteem within the community.
As a leading figure in his field, Yaakov Meir was appointed as the first Sephardic Chief Rabbi under the British Mandate of Palestine. This notable achievement underscored his importance as a spiritual leader and his ability to navigate the complexities of his role. Throughout his life, Yaakov Meir remained committed to his work, ultimately passing away in 1939, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most respected rabbis of his time. His contributions to the community were recognized with the honor of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
