Yudel Pen

צייר יהודי, שהתגורר בבלארוס

Yudel Pen was a prominent Belarusian artist, born in 1854, who played a significant role in the development of art in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. As an artist and educator, he made lasting contributions to the field, particularly through his founding of an influential art school in Vitebsk. This institution would go on to nurture the talents of several notable avant-garde artists, including Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky, and Ossip Zadkine, who would later become renowned figures in their own right.

Pen's own artistic work is characterized by its thoughtful depiction of Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement, a theme that was not commonly explored in art at the time. His consistent and sensitive portrayal of this aspect of Jewish culture has led some to refer to him as "the Sholem Aleichem of painting", highlighting the depth and insight he brought to his work. Through his teaching and artistic endeavors, Yudel Pen left an enduring legacy, shaping the course of modern art and inspiring future generations of artists until his passing in 1937.
