Shmuel Rodensky

Shmuel Rodensky was a renowned Israeli actor born in Russia in 1902. He relocated to Mandatory Palestine in 1924, where he pursued his passion for drama at the Eretz Israel Theatre in Tel Aviv. Rodensky's prolific career, which spanned six decades, encompassed stage, film, and television performances in both Israel and West Germany. His early years were marked by collaborations with various theatre companies from 1928 to 1948, followed by his notable affiliation with Habima Theatre, which began in 1949.

Rodensky's impressive repertoire included iconic roles such as Tevye the Dairyman in the German-language production of Fiddler on the Roof, which he performed over 1,400 times in West Germany and Switzerland. His film career was equally distinguished, with notable performances in Tevye and His Seven Daughters, The Odessa File, and the BBC miniseries Moses the Lawgiver. Rodensky's contributions to the world of theatre and film earned him numerous accolades, including the Federal Service Cross from the Federal Republic of Germany and the prestigious Israel Prize, solidifying his legacy as one of Israel's most esteemed actors, often likened to the great Laurence Olivier. He passed away in 1989, leaving behind a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
