Lazăr Șăineanu

Lazăr Șăineanu was a prominent Romanian scholar, born in 1859 in the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. He was a versatile expert in various fields, including philology, linguistics, folklore, and cultural history. With a strong background in Oriental and Romance studies, as well as Germanic languages, Șăineanu made significant contributions to the study of Yiddish and Romanian languages. His work in evolutionary linguistics and literary comparisons also garnered recognition, showcasing his expertise as a comparatist.
Șăineanu's innovative approaches to investigating and anthologizing Romanian folklore have had a lasting impact. He contextualized Romanian traditions within the broader framework of Balkan and East Central European cultures, and examined the historical development of the Romanian language in relation to its regional counterparts. A notable achievement is his collection of fairy tales, which remains a valued resource. Additionally, his 1896 publication, Dicționarul universal al limbii române, is a seminal work in Romanian lexicography that continues to be widely regarded and utilized.
