Zelig Kalmanovich was a prominent Lithuanian Jewish historian and scholar of the early 20th century. Born in 1885, he developed a strong expertise in philology, translation, and community archiving, with a particular focus on Yiddish studies. His work as a historian and archivist underscored his commitment to preserving and understanding the cultural heritage of his community.

Kalmanovich's career reached a significant milestone in 1929 when he settled in Vilnius, a city that would become the base for his future endeavors. It was there that he took on a leadership role as an early director of the YIVO institute, a position that allowed him to further his research and promote the study of Yiddish language and culture. Throughout his life, Kalmanovich remained dedicated to his scholarly pursuits until his death in 1944.
