Yiḥyah Salaḥ
הראב"ד הקבוע השישי של בית דין צנעא בתימן
Rabbi Yiḥyah Salaḥ, also known as Maharitz, was a prominent Yemeni Rabbi who made significant contributions to Jewish law. As a respected authority in his field, he authored a notable liturgical commentary called Etz Ḥayyim, which closely followed the legal principles outlined by Maimonides. Through his writings, Rabbi Yiḥyah Salaḥ played a crucial role in preserving Yemenite Jewish customs and traditions, while also incorporating certain Spanish rites and liturgies that had gained popularity in Yemen.
Rabbi Yiḥyah Salaḥ's career path was marked by diverse occupations before he became a leading figure in Jewish law. Initially, he worked as a blacksmith until the age of thirty, after which he transitioned to becoming a scrivener of sacred texts. Eventually, he rose to the position of chief jurist of the rabbinical court in Sana'a, where he could apply his knowledge and expertise to guide his community. His work and writings reflect the influence of preceding Rabbis, including Rabbi Yehudah Sa'adi and Rabbi Yihya al-Bashiri, demonstrating his connection to a broader tradition of Jewish scholarship.
